Best Defenders in £5m Budget
July 15, 2022
With over 1 million FPL players currently registered for the 22/23 season. In this article, I have tried to cover some Defenders who are not listed as premium defenders but can provide some attacking return on their price bracket.
Kieran Trippier: Trippier is one of the best defenders in premier league who is on set pieces and completely nailed in his side. Trippier scored 2 free kick goals in 6 appearance last season before suffering the injury. I think he can provide decent value at £5m after the addition of Boatman who can make their backline better ahead of some reasonable opening fixtures. In my opinion if anyone wants to get a £5m defender Trippier should be the one to go.
Matt Doherty: In my opinion, £5m priced Doherty will be first choice RWB and if Spurs can sign Spence, I still expect Doherty to start most of the game. In the system of Antonio Conte, the wingbacks of the team play big role in their attack. As a result, in last season Doherty got 2 goals & 5 assists form 15 appearance (9 start, 6 sub) only and with that he produced three double digits. Spurs will face Southampton, Wolves, Nottingham Forest and Fulham in their opening six games so some clean sheet & attacking return are looking very likely to happen for Doherty.
Kyle Walker: Man City fullback Kyle Walker seems like insane value at £5m. Obviously won’t play every week under PEP but PEP likes him and started most games even with Cancelo in exceptional form other than injury/illness last season. In last season he had 20 appearances and played full 90 minutes in 19 times and managed to get 2 assists. He had 85 FPL points last season & that’s more than four points per appearances. May be his minutes will be managed if Man City signs Cucurella in this window. Still I think at £5m he can be a good differential in first few games of the season.
Matty Cash: Matty Cash has become a key player under the management of Steven Gerrard form last season. Under Steven Gerrard from gameweek 12, this attacking minded fullback got six of his seven goal involvements and averaged about four points per start last season. From gameweek 12 no defender got more FPL points, touches inside the box & shots on target than Cash among the defenders under at £5m. He scored 4 goal last season & only Gabriel & Reece James scored more among the defenders. He can be a serious considerable option at £5m Cash as Villa’s early fixtures looking great.
Lucas Digne: Lucas Digne offers kind of same threat that Matty cash offers. He got 4 assists in his 16 Aston Villa appearances. Digne takes the corners and he is more likely to assist. In last season he created 52 chances from 29 appearances & that’s the highest among the defenders priced under £5m. But the worry is he is injury prone & for that history he can be rotated as the quality of the backup options are available there.
Kieran Tierney: Kieran Tierney made 22 appearances in last season for having problems in his knee and ankle. He managed to get more than four points in that that 22 appearances & that’s a total of 103 points. For the manager who are planning early wildcard, this £5m priced fullback can be a smart differential pick because of the appealing opening fixture of Arsenal and his willingness to run forward and cross. For those in for the long run, may not be worthy in my opinion as Ben white & Tomiyasu is there with lower price.
Aaron Cresswell: Cresswell is one of the FPL assets who are ignored by most of the mangers. He is a player who well known as the set piece specialist & loves to forward, makes crosses towards the box. Most of times his attacking return comes from his set pieces. In last season he had 34 successful crosses, 51 corners & 14 freekicks. So, a player like him at £5m can be a absolute steal.
What about botman?
Boatman at 4.5 Can be a good option if you can’t pick Trippier & want Newcastle DEF backup

Does Doherty has rotation risk?
